#6 Global Trends

I wish I could say that a global trend right now was an app or some streaming service, but sadly a global trend plaguing our world right now is the coronavirus. It seems that every corner of the Earth is suffering or quarantining themselves from this highly contagious virus. I wish I was joking, but sadly even somewhere as far off the beaten path as Magnolia Arkansas has shut down their college campus and public schools to aid is reducing the spread of this virus.

There are debates on the origins of the coronavirus with some saying it came from the wet markets of China from bat stew, to others who are more conspiracy minded believing that it was intentionally released by the WHO in China for population control. Regardless which side of the scale you favor, we know for sure the outbreaks began in China. With how the virus took off like wildfire, it was only a matter of time before it overtook the world.

Many feel that China's lack of action and precaution caused it to spread. Some even claim that the spread of the virus would be reduced by 95% if China had acted sooner. Other news sources claim that the over crowded cities of China was just the catalyst for the virus to run rampant.

East Asia was soon overrun with disease after China practically closed down its entire country in a desperate attempt to keep the virus under control.

"Coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, has so far killed more than 8,700 people and infected over 214,000. Cases have been confirmed in North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, Australia and the Pacific, with the illness exhibiting pneumonia-like symptoms. It was first reported to the World Health Organization on Dec. 31, 2019,"   Source

But this virus has grown to be a pandemic. Now Italy has been hit hard. Many people are taking to the Internet to share their feelings on the matter. One Instagram post reported several cases of Italians talking openly about their struggle and severity of the matter and being quarantined. claiming that they wished they would have taken the virus more seriously and that the effects it has had are very real.

Though the struggle of this catastrophe to Italy has been drastic, another trending video is how the Italians are keeping their spirits up by singing. The quarantined are out on their balconies singing with one another so that they stay connected and hopeful, but safe through social distancing.

The United States is now taking action to combat it. After the scare that President Trump was possibly infected, Trump seems more keen on taking action. He has now signed for a bill to be passed that offers paid sick leave for people, free testing for the virus, and other benefits related in aiding relief.  Many places of business are closing their doors and even the mega-corporate Walmart is reducing its hours. Public schools have closed, and people are advised to lay low for a while. Many articles and posts are circulating  educating people on preventative measures in the hope to minimize the spread. They are also asking people to test themselves for the virus and if feeling ill, to seek medical attention immediately and to stay away from others.

While that seems clear, what is less clear is the weird effect it has had on people feeling the need to hoard items and goods from their local grocery stores. While the Italians are singing, Americans are ransacking their local groceries stores as if Armageddon is upon us... specifically for toilet paper. Memes and jokes have not stopped circulating about how empty shelves of toilet paper were found at all the stores! While I am thankful to say that this is not a global trend, I am baffled why it is the trend across the country.

The pandemic is trending globally in every country on every social media outlet. I wish there was a more positive thing that was trending on the web, but sadly that's not the case. There is much panic and uncertainty during this time, and it appears to be the talk of the globe. While this is not the first pandemic to strike (and surely not the last), the access of the Internet and social media has allowed for millions to discuss their thoughts openly on the matter spreading much talk about the topic.
