It's hard to deny that streaming is now a part of our daily lives. With a phone attached to our hand 90% of the day, and free streaming services offered right at our fingertips, how can our generation not be addicted to the benefits of streaming whenever and wherever?
My video habits are probably not that far off from most other college students. I have my shows that I enjoy, and I know how to find the videos I want to watch. I mainly watch videos through Instagram or Youtube. Here on these places I can watch clips of the news, trending videos, or parts of shows that I cannot find on the streaming services I have. Many Instagram users are uploading their TikTok videos to Instagram also, so I am able to see what's trending there as well
As far as the streaming services I use, I recently have been introduced to Disney+ thanks to my roommate. At first, I was not sold on it due to its glitchy start, but I just finished the first season of The Mandalorian, and I am anxiously waiting for the second. There may not be several shows I am watching on there, but that one is enough for me to say I like having Disney+ on my laptop. It is also nice to have all the Disney movies in one place so if you are wanting to go back to the classics or re watch your favorite movies, they are all right there.
It is also thanks to my roommate that I have Netflix on my laptop as well. I mainly use Netflix to browse for potential movies on nights I have time to watch a movie, or have time to watch a show or two. I am not a die hard fan of any shows right now on Netflix, so I am not a regular user or "binge watch" often. My roommate and I are currently watching Arrow, and we plan to start The Flash soon both of which are on Netflix currently.
Besides using video streaming to watch my favorite shows or funny videos, I also use video technology for communication as well. Last month I found the messaging app, Telegram, to be very useful in communicating with my boyfriend. Over Christmas break, my boyfriend went to stay the month overseas in his home country. We weren't able to communicate through text due to cost of service, so we used this messaging app. This app allows for calls, texts, voice messages, and video to be sent. We were able to streaming videos back and forth to keep each other updated. I liked the features so much that we are still using the app even though he is back even though it is no longer a necessity.
On average, I spend a lot of my time streaming videos; my video habits are not too different from most people my age. It is relevant if I want to stay up to date on pop culture and trends, as well as my communication, and that is especially important as a media major. I would say the only difference is where I spend the bulk of my time, which for me, is using it for communication. Communication is changing, and with video chat quality improving, it is not uncommon that most text services will have to revamp if they want to stay current.
